After purchasing my 2013 Camaro ZL1 convertible, I immediately began searching for a hitch for my car because I like to bike trail ride and have an expensive tray mount rack to transport my bikes. I was looking for a "no drill" type hitch because I didn't want holes in my frame that could compromise the integrity of the car.I searched several websites including Amazon, Reese, Drawtite, and Curt Manufacturing for fitment. Each one said this hitch didn't exist for a ZL1, however, when I searched for a Camaro SS convertible, this hitch popped up with a caveat of "except with ground effects,," like you would find on an RS package. I was recommended a different style hitch from Curt that required drilling into the frame.
I researched the difference in the attachment points for an SS and ZL1 convertible for this hitch and there was no difference I could find or see. I spent hours trying to determine the difference in clearance between the different style of rear valences on the SS and ZL1 and came to the conclusion that if there was any difference, it was very very small. I then discovered why this hitch did not pop up, because Chevrolet states the ZL1 is not designed to tow anything at all.
On a whim, I decided to order it and crossed my fingers that it worked, especially since I had no intention to tow anything. An important thing to know is that even though the SS is rated by Chevy to tow, it can only handle a 200 lb tongue weight which basically equals out to a small jet ski trailer. motorcycle trailer or bike rack. The car nor the hitch can handle towing anything over 200 lbs, so if you were intending on taking your boat out, you will probably cause severe damage to your car along with whatever you are towing when it breaks loose! This is a Class I hitch with the lowest possible rating so be very careful.
I did a pre-fit to see if the hitch would work and didn't see anything that would interfere with the installation. The installation was pretty straight forward and I didn't even have to jack the car up because the mounting locations were only about 12-15 inches from the rear bumper. The only confusing part for me was the washers which are used as spacers. You have to remove the factory washers(if installed) and use 4 washers (included)for each of the 2 forward bolts as spacers between the support rod and subframe. The washers don't actually go between the bolt and rod, so make sure you put these on right. You then have to fishwire (included in package) the 2 large carraiage bolts and mounting plates through some small opening. You have to be sure the fishwire is attached to the bolt, then feed iit through the plate before putting it in the opening or you'll never get it installed! Total installation time was approximately 20 minutes as stated by Curt.
Once it was completely installed, I did notice it was touching my rear valence, but it looks to do the same exact thing on the SS. It pushed the valence up ever so slightly that I could see it, but the normal person probably wouldn't even notice. I was fine with this as I didn't really have another alternative. Looking at the ZL1 from the back, I definitely lost some "cool points" as it doesn't look quite as mean from the back. The hitch for the most part is not very noticeable and tucks well under the car. I will be making sure the bolts stay tightened because of the mounting points on the sub frame is not very big and there is a huge margin to cause severe damage if they come loose. All in all an easy install and great product. This is my 2nd Curt hitch and I highly recommend this one for your convertible (there is a different hitch for coupes that is "no drill".).
