BOYO VTM600M 6 LCD REAR VIEW MIRROR Review

The Boyo VTM600 clamps on to the OEM rearview mirror. I had it professionally installed and the installer added strong plastic strapping around the OEM mirror to hold the Boyo mirror in place.

This mirror offers a large LCD color display -- 6", according to the specs. The display works well, with one caveat: There tends to be a lot of glare off the mirror during the day, so you have to cock your head just right to see it clearly. But once you get used to that, it's not a problem. This mirror's reflecting surface is dark, so as to heighten the LCD display's sharpness, I presume. But that doesn't hamper views of following traffic when you're driving. Because of the dark tint, there's no need to adjust the mirror for night-time driving.

The rearview display is no substitute for the usual method of looking all around when backing up. I've just made it part of my "scan", with very quick glances at the display intermingled with over-the-shoulder "looks" out the rear window, and so forth.

One disadvantage of this mirror is that the daytime reflection is a bit shaky, because all the road vibration is transmitted to it through the OEM mirror behind it. I got accustomed to this quickly and it doesn't seem to be a problem at night, but some drivers might not like it.

There are available rearview-camera-display mirrors that can be substituted for a vehicle's original mirror, and no doubt they wouldn't exhibit the shake that the Boyo mirror does. But they tend to cost twice as much. You can't always afford to have everything ...
